Flowers are food for the soul!
Central Otago – it’s the region of New Zealand that has a vision to set itself apart from the rest and loves to be known as “a world of difference”. It’s also the place where there are four seasons and stunning landscapes. This is celebrated by the amazing growers and artisanal creators who celebrate the differences of the area. Scrubby Gully is proudly part of that Central Otago landscape and embraces the things that make this place so unique.
An unusual name you say? We think it is completely the right name as it comes from Scrubby Gully Creek - the waterway that originally provided irrigation to the property. After all, there is no life without water, particularly in the dry, desert like climate of Central Otago.
The business itself started in early 2000 with the planting of bulbs, peonies and pinot noir grapes but now focuses on producing a wide range of flowers. Being based in Central Otago has taught us to embrace the seasons so our flowers are grown seasonally.
We have three pillars to our ethos - grow / create / share. Our aim is to grow regeneratively, create sustainably and share knowledge willingly and generously.
We work hard to improve our soil health and biodiversity by adding locally made compost and mulch. This also improves the water holding properties of the soil which is important in an area where rain is a rare and precious thing.
Creating sustainably reflects our commitment to the environment with an extreme reluctance to use ‘single use’ plastics or floral foam in any creations.
Sharing knowledge generously is a joy! We love running workshops on how to grow and create and encouraging others to put their hands on nature is so good for our mental health and theirs.
Our customers range from wholesale to retail, and we really enjoy the community aspect of selling face-to-face at Markets across the district.
Buying flowers from us, our customers know that they are getting locally grown, chemical free blooms that bring joy to those who give and receive them – we believe that flowers are the perfect food for the soul. The flowers are available by the bloom, bunch, bouquet or bucket.
We grow regeneratively.
We create sustainably.
We share knowledge willingly.
